The Last Two-Step

(written yesterday, around 2:30pm, while Lisel napped)

Tonight marks the last night of the Elizabeth McQueen Happy Hour residency at the Continental Club. And I'm already getting a little nostalgic.

Time moves so much quicker now that I'm all grown up and parenting and what not. When we started the Wednesdays seemed to stretch out in front of me forever. And then I blinked my eyes and they were over.

I may not have mentioned this before, I was as terrified as I was excited about these Happy Hour shows. It's been a helluva long time since I've led a band and I was one big ball of rusty nerves.

And I felt rusty for a couple of shows. Like I was getting my sea legs while up here on stage. Communicating my needs to other musicians... Sometimes I was did it right and sometimes I forgot that they couldn't read my mind. Getting musicians up to speed with the new material...I want to apologize to them right now for the woefully bad charts I provided. They all hung like pros, even when I was at my least professional.

I didn't quite get my fashion blog component happening, but I did dress up
for the gigs, which was actually really fun (hair and makeup and clothes have never totally been my thing).

And now, I'm getting ready for the last gig. And I feel way more confident than I did eight weeks ago. And I wish we had a few more shows ahead of us, because I feel like I'm just now getting the hang of everything. Like I'm really enjoying the music rather than worrying about what song I'll be calling next, or what I'll say between songs. I feel like the band is starting to gel and connect and commune in that way that makes the rest of the world fall away, and suddenly your in the middle of the music, and you can feel the fact that so are the people around you and it's all very meaning of life-esque.

So thanks to everyone for coming out on school nights and to listen and dance and sing along. Thanks ti the musicians who learned a ton of material and played their asses off. It was awesome. And we'll have to do it again.

Thanks for giving me something to do on Wednesday nights! I made it out to 4 or 5 of the shows and they were all uniformly great. Y'all did seem to hit a nice stride last night, though. Good stuff all around.
